Description

This book draws on the rich resource of tikanga Maori to develop a procedure for managing group discussion in settings where Maori and non-Maori from different ethnic backgrounds meet to talk about common concerns. Korero Tahi -- talking together -- is the opposite of talking past each other (which was the focus of an earlier book, Talking Past Each Other ). The Korero tahi procedure aims to create an environment which is comfortable and empowering to all participants in a discussion, an environment where non feel disadvantaged or intimidated by rules, words or actions they do not understand, and where all are accorded equal dignity and respect. It can be used in a wide range of contexts such as conferences, workshops or community discussions. Korero Tahi is based on Dame Joan Metges own extensive experience of observation in Maori settings, discussion with Maori experts and conducting workshops with Maori partners. It is sensible and imaginative; and while practical in its first intent, it has valuable social implications for contemporary New Zealand.
